New Windsor is a town located on the eastern side of Orange County, New York, positioned adjacent to the Hudson River and the City of Newburgh. According to the 2020 census, the town is home to 27,805 residents.
The area that is now New Windsor was originally inhabited by the Munsee people, part of the Lenape confederation. European settlement began in 1685 when Scottish colonists, led by David Toshack and Major Patrick McGregorie, arrived in the region under the encouragement of Governor Thomas Dongan. These settlers established themselves near Moodna Creek, with McGregorie building a cabin and Toshack setting up a trading post. The town was officially founded by the General Assembly of New York on April 5, 1763. The name New Windsor derives from Windsor, England, first appearing in records from 1728.
During the American Revolutionary War, New Windsor played a crucial role as a major depot for the Continental Army and Army Medical Department. In October 1782, troops began arriving to establish a winter encampment that eventually covered 1,600 acres and housed between 6,000 and 8,000 men, women, and children. The soldiers constructed over 700 huts along with various outbuildings including guardhouses, blacksmith shops, and a hospital. A structure called the Temple was built to serve as both a place of worship and general meeting hall. It was at this encampment that General Washington established the Badge of Military Merit, now known as the Purple Heart. The town has preserved 167 acres of the former encampment sites, and the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is located in New Windsor today.
