Franklin is a town in New London County, Connecticut, with a population of 1,863 according to the 2020 census. The town encompasses 19.6 square miles and includes the village of North Franklin as part of the Southeastern Connecticut Planning Region.
European settlement in the area began in 1663 as part of a larger division from Norwich. Residents first sought to establish their own ecclesiastical society in 1710, but their petition was denied. Six years later, they succeeded in forming the second ecclesiastical society of Norwich, known as the West Farms. During the First Great Awakening, the community experienced significant religious controversy, particularly regarding meetinghouse location and divisions between Old and New Lights followers. These tensions led Minister Henry Willes to retire in 1749. In 1758, the eastern portion split to form the Eighth, or Pautipaug, society, with boundaries finalized in 1761. The West Farms and Pautipaug societies merged to incorporate as the Town of Franklin in 1786, named after Benjamin Franklin.
The town's geography changed considerably in 1861 when the town of Sprague was incorporated from Franklin and Lisbon, establishing Franklin's current boundaries. Originally, Franklin's borders extended east to the Shetucket River and included the village of Baltic before this division.
Franklin has produced notable citizens throughout its history, including U.S. Senator Uriah Tracy, Lieutenant Governor of New York John Tracy, and Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Allen Tucker. The Ashbel Woodward House, built in 1835, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
