Ojo Caliente, whose name means "Hot Spring" or literally "Hot Eye," is an unincorporated community in Taos County, New Mexico, situated along the Rio Ojo Caliente between Española and Taos, approximately fifty miles north of Santa Fe. The 2020 census recorded a population of 135. The area has an arid to semi-arid climate with an average annual precipitation of eleven inches and sits at an elevation of 6,300 feet. The community consists mainly of small farms irrigated by acequias drawing water from the Rio Ojo Caliente.
Ojo Caliente was first settled sporadically beginning in 1735 by genizaros, detribalized Native Americans descended largely from slaves, and Hispanic settlers. In 1754, the Spanish government granted land to genizaros to establish the community on New Mexico's frontier as protection against raids by Comanche and other tribes. By 1766, a fort had been constructed for defense. Following Governor Juan Bautista de Anza's report that the settlement was deserted in 1779, eighteen families from Bernalillo resettled the area in 1790 after peace with the Comanche was established. Major Zebulon Pike visited in 1807, describing an adobe-walled settlement of approximately 500 people and noting the warm springs as "the greatest natural curiosity," remarking that each spring produced sufficient water to power a mill.
The community is renowned for the Ojo Caliente Hot Springs, one of North America's oldest health resorts. Tewa tradition holds that the pools provided access to the underworld. Frank Mauro purchased the springs in 1932, establishing a family business spanning three generations. The resort buildings and the nearby Round Barn, constructed in 1924, are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
