Onaway is a city located in Presque Isle County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, positioned just east of the county line it shares with Cheboygan County. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 890 residents. Today, Onaway proudly identifies itself as the "Sturgeon Capital of Michigan," a distinction rooted in the presence of a lake sturgeon streamside rearing facility situated on the nearby Black River, where the fish migrate downstream to the Cheboygan River and eventually to Lake Huron.
The community's origins trace back to October 23, 1882, when it first received a post office under the name Shaw, with civil engineer Thomas E. Shaw serving as postmaster. In 1886, Merritt Chandler arrived and platted the community, renaming it Onaway. After Chandler took over as postmaster in 1890, the office officially changed its name to Onaway on March 29 of that year. The name changed once more to Adalaska in 1893 before reverting to Onaway in 1897. The community was incorporated as a village in 1899 and achieved city status in 1903.
Onaway experienced significant industrial prominence in the early twentieth century as home to one of the world's largest wooden automobile steering wheel manufacturers, which produced approximately sixty-five percent of the world's wooden steering wheels during that era. This manufacturing heritage reflects the city's historical importance to American industry during the automobile age.
