Padanaram is a coastal village in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, situated on Buzzards Bay near the inlet of Apponagansett Bay. The settlement emerged in the mid-17th century as part of the expansion of Old Dartmouth following the Plymouth Colony's 1652 purchase of the land from the Wampanoag people. During King Philip's War, English colonists in the area sought refuge at Russell Garrison, whose remains can still be seen at the foot of Lucy Street.
By the mid-18th century, Padanaram had developed into a shipbuilding center. The village experienced a pivotal moment during the American Revolution when, in September 1778, British raiding parties attacked as part of Grey's raid. At that time known as Akin's Landing, the village was specifically targeted after resident Elihu Akin expelled Loyalists from the area. The British raiders burned much of the village, focusing their destruction on Akin's properties. The damage was extensive, costing approximately £105,960 to repair in 1778. Akin, who never recovered financially, spent his remaining years in a small home on Potters Hill until his death in 1794. The village honored his legacy by calling itself Akin's Wharf for twenty years following the war.
The village name ultimately derives from Laban Thatcher, an early resident who identified with the Biblical figure Laban of Paddan Aram, replacing the earlier Wampanoag name Ponagansett. In the nineteenth century, Padanaram prospered as a whaling port and hosted a substantial salt works. Today it thrives as a residential community with yachting businesses, galleries, shops, and restaurants. The New Bedford Yacht Club, founded in 1877, established its main station in Padanaram in 1901.
