Palmetto is a city in Manatee County, Florida, situated on the north bank of the Manatee River as part of the Sarasota metropolitan area. The city's population has grown steadily, increasing from 12,606 residents in 2010 to 13,323 in 2020. Samuel Sparks Lamb, arriving from Clarke County, Mississippi in 1868, is considered the Father of Palmetto, having surveyed and plotted the original settlement and donated land to help establish the community. Harlee, then reincorporated as a city in 1897. The arrival of the railroad in 1902 transformed the settlement, shifting the town center from the waterfront to the Seaboard Air Line train station. By the late 1930s, Palmetto had developed into a thriving community of over three thousand residents, with its economy centered on fishing, fruit and vegetable packing and shipping. A significant chapter in the city's modern history involved a former dolomite mine that operated from the 1950s to 1974. After several unsuccessful redevelopment attempts, the 214-acre site was eventually purchased by WC Riviera Partners and transformed in 1998 into Riviera Dunes, a residential community featuring a marina, townhouses, and homes that revitalized this historic waterfront area.
