Panaca is an unincorporated town in eastern Lincoln County, Nevada, situated on State Route 319 near the Utah border at an elevation of 4,729 feet. According to the 2023 census, the town has a population of 1,272 residents. The area was first explored by Mormon scouts in 1857, who were sent by Brigham Young to locate a potential refuge. The scouts recognized the value of the Meadow Valley oasis at the headwaters of the Muddy River and began irrigation work, though they soon abandoned the site. Panaca was established as a permanent Mormon colony in 1864, making it the first permanent settlement by European Americans in southern Nevada. Originally part of Washington County, Utah, Panaca became part of Nevada following congressional boundary changes in 1866. The town's name derives from the Southern Paiute word Pan-nuk-ker, meaning metal, money, or wealth. Historically, the local economy relied on charcoal production from coke ovens that supplied smelters in the nearby silver mining town of Bullionville. Today, agriculture remains the primary economic focus. Panaca holds the distinction of being one of only two Nevada communities that prohibit gambling, the other being Boulder City. The town is also the only Nevada community that forbids the sale of alcoholic beverages. Visitors can explore the nearby Panaca Summit Kilns, historic beehive-shaped charcoal kilns built in the mid-1870s and now managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
