Pass Christian, nicknamed The Pass, is a city in Harrison County, Mississippi, and part of the Gulfport–Biloxi Metropolitan Statistical Area. With a population of 5,686 as of the 2020 census, this coastal community carries a rich and complex history spanning thousands of years.
Native Americans inhabited the Gulf Coast region for many thousands of years, leaving behind Indian mounds and artifacts throughout southern Mississippi. One Indian village once existed near where White Harbor Road meets U.S. Route 90, and the beach in that area has yielded numerous arrowheads and pottery sherds over time. French-Canadian explorers discovered Pass Christian in 1699, shortly after establishing their first colony in nearby Biloxi. They initially called the deepwater pass "Passe aux Huîtres" for the abundant oysters they found there. The pass was later named for Nicholas Christian L'Adnier, who settled on nearby Cat Island in 1746.
In 1781, Julia de la Brosse, known as Widow Asmard, owned the entire peninsula. Upon her death in 1799, she deeded 800 arpents of downtown Pass Christian to Charles Asmar, a free person of color. Pass Christian was officially chartered as a town in 1848. Before the Civil War, it flourished as a famous resort destination for wealthy New Orleanians who built historic mansions along the shoreline. The Southern Yacht Club, established here in 1849, was the first yacht club in the South and second in the nation before relocating to New Orleans in 1857.
The twentieth and twenty-first centuries brought severe challenges. Hurricane Camille struck on August 17, 1969, followed by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, with each causing near-total destruction to the city.
