Passaic is a city in Passaic County, New Jersey, located just ten miles from New York City along the Passaic River. As of the 2020 census, it was the state's sixteenth-most-populous municipality with 70,537 residents, and among cities with more than 50,000 people, it ranked as the fifth-most densely populated in the United States. The city's name comes from the Lenape word "pahsayèk," meaning either "valley" or "place where the land splits."
The area was first settled in 1678 by Dutch traders as Acquackanonk Township, with a settlement established on the Passaic River in 1679. A commercial center developed around a wharf at what became known as Acquackanonk Landing. In 1854, a political dispute over the village's name ended when Alfred Speer convinced the U.S. Postmaster General to adopt the simpler name "Passaic," which he displayed on a sign at the local railroad depot. Passaic was formally incorporated as a village in 1871 and chartered as a city in 1873.
During the nineteenth century, Passaic grew into a textile and metalworking center. The 1926 Passaic Textile Strike, led by union organizer Albert Weisbord, brought 36,000 mill workers to successfully defend their wages against cuts. The city has also been called "The Birthplace of Television," as experimental television station W2XCD began transmitting from DeForest Radio Corporation in Passaic in 1931. Allen B. DuMont, formerly DeForest's chief engineer, opened DuMont Laboratories in Passaic in 1937 and established the world's first commercial television network in 1946.
