Patterson is a city in Stanislaus County, California, located off Interstate 5, approximately 27 miles southeast of Tracy and 17 miles southwest of Modesto. As of the 2020 Census, the city had a population of 23,781 residents. The area's history stretches back to the Rancho Del Puerto Mexican land grant of 1844, which marked the beginning of the region that would eventually become modern Patterson. In 1866, John D. Patterson then subdivided the land and designed the town with distinctive urban planning inspired by Washington, D.C. and Paris, France, featuring circles and radiating streets lined with palm, eucalyptus, and sycamore trees. The Patterson Colony map was officially filed in 1909, and the city incorporated on December 22, 1919, becoming the third city in Stanislaus County to do so. Today, Patterson is widely recognized as the "Apricot Capital of the World," a designation approved by the chamber of commerce in May 1971. The city celebrates this heritage annually with an Apricot Fiesta featuring food, drinks, desserts, and games.
