Pelahatchie is a town in Rankin County, Mississippi, with a population of 1,272 as of the 2020 census. Founded in 1850, the town takes its name from Pelahatchie Creek, a name derived from a Native American term meaning "crooked creek." During the late 1800s, Pelahatchie became the bright spot in the county, largely due to railroad access that ran through the heart of town.
The community serves as part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area and encompasses 3.2 square miles. Education in the town is provided by the Rankin County School District through public schools including Pelahatchie Elementary and Pelahatchie Attendance Center, as well as the private East Rankin Academy.
Pelahatchie has contributed notable figures to the state and beyond. The town is the birthplace of Bruiser Kinard, a member of both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame, as well as Freeman King, an actor and comedian, country blues musician Rubin Lacey, John Moore who served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1996 to 2017, and A.
