Bristol, known as Pemaquid from 1632 to 1765, sits in Lincoln County, Maine, with a 2020 population of 2,834. The town encompasses several villages including New Harbor, Round Pond, Bristol Mills, and Chamberlain, and is home to the Pemaquid Archeological Site, a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Once the territory of the Wawenock Abenaki Indians, early Bristol became one of the most important and contested frontier settlements in the province. English merchants from Bristol, England received the Pemaquid Patent in 1631, building upon seasonal fishing operations that had begun as early as 1625 with a year-round trading post for fur trading at Pemaquid Point.
The settlement endured a turbulent history marked by repeated conflict. In 1632, pirate Dixie Bull raided the village, and later that year a hurricane sank the galleon Angel Gabriel offshore. Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Pemaquid faced numerous attacks during King Philip's War, King William's War, and other conflicts between English colonists and French and Native forces. Notable figures including Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville attacked the settlement, and pirates, including those connected to Samuel Bellamy, raided local vessels. The town was formally incorporated as Bristol on June 21, 1765, named after the English port city of its patent proprietors. The Revolutionary War led townspeople to dismantle the fort in 1775, and the site was later rebuilt and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993.
