Phoenix is a city in Jackson County in Oregon's Rogue Valley, located three miles southeast of Medford along Interstate 5. The area's settlement began around 1850 when brothers Hiram and Samuel Colver arrived. The community was initially known locally as Gasburg before Wait, an agent for the Phoenix Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut, gave the settlement its official name in 1857 and established its post office that same year. A Washington community, Waitsburg, was later named after Wait.
Phoenix experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The city's record high temperature of 115 degrees Fahrenheit occurred on June 27, 2021, while the record low of negative 8 degrees Fahrenheit was set on December 9, 1972.
