Located on M-89 just east of US 131, the city sits conveniently between major regional centers, about three miles west of Otsego, ten miles north of Kalamazoo, and thirty-five miles south of Grand Rapids. The Kalamazoo River flows through the center of town, and a power canal diverts a portion of the river around the downtown area, earning Plainwell its distinctive nickname, "The Island City."
Settlement in this part of Michigan began in the 1830s following the removal of native people. Allegan County was organized in 1835, and the Plainwell area developed soon after as a stop on the stagecoach route between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. The Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad later followed the same corridor, and with the automobile age came US Route 131 running through town. In the 1960s, a four-lane improved US-131 was constructed west of Plainwell to connect the two cities, with an interchange on M-89. This highway improvement transformed Plainwell into a bedroom community for workers in Kalamazoo and southern Grand Rapids. The city itself covers 2.06 square miles and is served by Plainwell Community Schools, which operates two high schools: Plainwell High School and Renaissance High School.
