Plant City is an incorporated city in Hillsborough County, Florida, located approximately midway between Brandon and Lakeland along Interstate 4 as part of the Tampa Bay area. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 39,764. Despite common assumptions that the name derives from plant nurseries that thrived in the subtropical Gulf Coast climate, Plant City was actually named after Henry B. Plant, a prominent railroad developer whose South Florida Railroad significantly boosted commerce in this primarily agricultural community.
The city has a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s, when it was originally called Ichepuckesassa, after a Native American village that once occupied the territory. In 1860, it was renamed Cork after the postmaster's Irish hometown before finally becoming Plant City in commemoration of Henry B. Plant and his railroad. The city was incorporated on January 10, 1885, and was officially reincorporated as the City of Plant City in 1911. From 1988 to 1997, Plant City served as the spring training home for baseball's Cincinnati Reds, who played exhibition games at Plant City Stadium.
