Prospect is a home rule-class city located in northeastern Jefferson County and extending slightly into Oldham County, Kentucky. Situated along US Route 42 about twelve miles northeast of downtown Louisville, this affluent community has deep roots in the region's development. The area was originally settled by farmers in the late eighteenth century under the name Sand Hill. The modern town emerged around the Prospect railroad station, erected around 1872 by the Louisville, Harrods Creek and Westport Railway. The station's name referenced either the scenic hilltop views or the anticipated completion of the rail line, which ultimately never reached its intended destination and collapsed into bankruptcy in 1879. When a post office was established in 1886, the local postmaster attempted to name it Wilhoyte in his own honor, but the community promptly corrected this within a month. For decades the area remained largely agricultural despite some luxury residences appearing in the late nineteenth century and hourly electrified trolley service beginning in 1904. Significant transformation came in the mid-1960s with large-scale high-end subdivisions, including the Estates of Hunting Creek with its golf course, followed by the nearly six-hundred-acre Norton Commons development. Prospect officially incorporated as a city in 1974. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 4,592 and is recognized as one of Kentucky's wealthiest communities. The town experienced major damage from an EF2 tornado on April 2, 2024.
