Red Cloud is the county seat of Webster County, Nebraska, with a population of 962 according to the 2020 census. The region was intermittently occupied by the Pawnees as hunting grounds until 1833, when a treaty led them to surrender their lands south of the Platte River. In 1870, the area opened to homesteaders, and settlers including Silas Garber filed claims along Crooked Creek east of the present-day city. The town was voted county seat of the newly formed Webster County in 1871 and was named after the renowned Oglala Lakota leader Red Cloud. The city was platted in 1872.
Red Cloud holds particular significance as the home of author Willa Cather, who lived there with her family for seven years beginning in 1883 at age nine and visited often throughout her life. She drew inspiration from the town for her novels, most notably using it as the basis for Black Hawk in My Ántonia. Her early articles appeared in the city's first newspaper, The Red Cloud Chief. Several nineteenth-century buildings described in her books form part of the Willa Cather Historic District, the largest district dedicated to an author on the National Register of Historic Places. Her childhood home is also preserved within this district, making Red Cloud an important literary landmark that continues to reflect the heritage Cather captured in her celebrated works.
