Rock is an unincorporated community nestled in Maple Ridge Township in Delta County, Michigan, located along M-35 and the Canadian National Railway about sixteen and a half miles north-northwest of Gladstone. Today, this quiet settlement is home to 181 residents and maintains its own post office under ZIP code 49880.
The area's roots run back to 1865, when workers building the Chicago and North Western Railway first settled in the region. The community began to take shape in 1866 when J.R. Steele purchased land from the railroad and established himself there, followed by George English, who opened a store that same year. Originally called Malton Spur, the settlement supported a post office named Malton from 1879 to 1883, with Henrietta Crawford serving as its postmaster. The community later became known as Maple Ridge, but when residents sought to establish a new post office, they chose a different name altogether. John Niequist, who would become the new postmaster, coined the name Rock, inspired by the rocky terrain characteristic of the area. This new post office officially opened on June 16, 1886, marking the beginning of Rock's modern identity.
