Rosalie is a small village in Thurston County, Nebraska, situated within the Omaha Indian Reservation. With a population of 159 at the 2020 census, it remains a modest community with deep historical roots. The village was platted in 1906 when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad extended service to the area, marking a significant moment in its development.
The village bears the name of Rosalie La Flesche Farley, a woman of considerable importance to the Omaha community. She was the daughter of Joseph La Flesche, the last principal chief of the Omaha tribe selected through traditional means in the nineteenth century and the only chief of partial European descent. After the tribe relocated to the reservation, Rosalie La Flesche took on the role of financial manager, overseeing grazing leases and other business transactions for the tribe. She married Edward Farley of nearby Bancroft, Nebraska. Her family was notable for its achievements; one sister was Susette "Bright Eyes" LaFlesche, an author and activist who married journalist Thomas Tibbles, while another sister, Susan LaFlesche Picotte, became a physician and married a Yankton Sioux man.
Education in the area underwent significant change when the Bancroft and Rosalie schools merged in 1982 to form the Bancroft-Rosalie Public Schools district, which is based in Bancroft. In 2024, voters approved a seventeen million dollar bond issue to expand the school building substantially.
