Roslindale is a primarily residential neighborhood located six miles south-southwest of downtown Boston, bordered by Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, West Roxbury, and Mattapan. Originally part of the town of Roxbury, the area seceded in 1851 along with Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury, then voted to be annexed to Boston in 1873. In the 1860s, the neighborhood was called South Street Crossing because of the railroad's intersection with South Street. When residents sought their own post office district, community member John Pierce suggested the name Roslindale, inspired by the historic town of Roslin near Edinburgh, Scotland, combined with "dale" to reflect the surrounding hills. The name was formally established with the United States Postal Service.
Roslindale developed as a classic streetcar suburb following the construction of horse-drawn street railway service between Forest Hills and Dedham beginning in the 1880s. The neighborhood experienced steady residential growth and was once known as Boston's "garden suburb." The area's commercial heart, Roslindale Square, became a major shopping district by the 1920s, when it assumed its current configuration with tree-lined Adams Park at its center. The Square was home to department stores, showrooms, food markets, and a movie theatre before suburban shopping malls emerged in the 1970s. Today, Roslindale Square has experienced renewed success as a local shopping district and community hub. The portion of the Arnold Arboretum south of Bussey Street is located in Roslindale.
