Ruby is an incorporated town in central western Alaska, situated on the south bank of the Yukon River at the northwesternmost tip of the Nowitna National Wildlife Refuge. The town was established in 1911 as a result of a gold rush that began after gold was first discovered at the current townsite on Ruby Creek in 1906. Word of a major gold strike on Long Creek, thirty miles south of Ruby, sparked a stampede in 1910, and as discoveries followed on nearby creeks, Ruby became the essential supply point for the surrounding mines. At its peak, the town supported a population near three thousand people.
However, Ruby experienced significant decline beginning in 1918. Many men left to serve in World War I, and some of the town's business people and families were lost in the sinking of the Canadian passenger liner Sophia. A devastating fire in 1929 destroyed much of the business district, followed by a flood in 1931 that destroyed additional riverfront buildings. After World War II, Native Americans from nearby Kokrines relocated to Ruby to settle in the abandoned homes. Today, the town has a population of 139 as of the 2020 census, with only a general store and post office remaining as businesses. Ruby is accessible only by boat or air and is served by Ruby Airport. The town gained additional historical significance when Alaska's largest gold nugget ever found, weighing 294.10 troy ounces, was discovered near Ruby in 1998.
