San Acacia is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place in Socorro County, New Mexico, situated along the Rio Grande in the Albuquerque Basin. As of the 2020 census, the community had a population of 38 people. Located 22 miles south of Bernardo and 14 miles north of Socorro, San Acacia was named by Spanish settlers after Saint Acacius, an early Christian saint. The community's spelling was altered to San Acacia when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was built through Socorro County in 1878, transforming the settlement into a prosperous railway town.
However, San Acacia's fortunes declined dramatically following devastating floods in August 1929, when torrential rains in nearby river watersheds caused flooding that extended from San Acacia to San Marcial, destroying crops and damaging the railway. Many buildings, including the old church, were subsequently abandoned, and the town became largely deserted.
Today, San Acacia's primary significance lies in its role in regional water management. The San Acacia Diversion Dam, built in 1934 and rehabilitated in 1957, transfers water from the Rio Grande into irrigation channels serving the Socorro Division. This concrete structure features 29 radial gates and stands 17 feet high. When combined with the Isleta Diversion Dam to the north during low-water periods, the two dams can divert all water from the Rio Grande along a 110-mile stretch of river. The community remains part of Socorro Consolidated Schools.
