San Simeon is a small unincorporated community on California's central coast in San Luis Obispo County, positioned conveniently along State Route 1 about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. As of the 2020 census, the community has a population of 445. The area has a rich history extending back at least 11,000 years, when humans first settled the region. The Chumash people later inhabited the area, with a large village located south of San Simeon at Morro Creek. Spanish explorer Juan Cabrillo discovered the bay in 1542, naming it the Bay of Sardines, while the Portolà expedition passed through the area in September 1769 during the first European land exploration of Alta California.
San Simeon developed gradually over the 19th century. Portuguese shore whalers under Captain Joseph Clark arrived around 1864 and established a whaling station with a wharf in 1869. Though that wharf proved unsuitable, George Hearst built a new one in 1878, and a small community developed around it. Shore whaling continued in the area until approximately 1908. San Simeon's most iconic feature is Hearst Castle, the hilltop mansion built for William Randolph Hearst in the early 20th century, now a major tourist attraction. The area also hosts the Piedras Blancas rookery, a large northern elephant seal colony located seven miles north of San Simeon. The community enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate moderated by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean.
