Sandy is a city in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area located in Salt Lake County, Utah, with a population of 96,904 according to the 2020 United States census. Situated at the base of the Wasatch Mountains thirteen miles south of Salt Lake City, Sandy was first used by nomadic bands of Paiute, Shoshone, and Bannock Indians who traveled seasonally between Utah Lake and Bear Lake. Permanent settlement began in the 1860s and 1870s when pioneers were drawn to the availability of land in the less crowded southern end of the Salt Lake Valley.
Sandy's early development was shaped by mining and the railroad. When silver mining began in Little Cottonwood Canyon, the town became a vital supply station, with hotels, saloons, and other businesses serving miners. Three major smelters—the Flagstaff, the Mingo, and the Saturn—made Sandy the territory's most significant smelting center for several years. The railroad, built in 1873, connected Sandy to Salt Lake City and facilitated transportation of ore and products. Sandy was incorporated in 1893, largely to combat elements associated with its mining-based economy. By 1900, the town had transformed into a rural community centered on church, farming, and family.
Today, Sandy is home to significant commercial and entertainment venues including the Shops at South Town, Jordan Commons, and America First Field, which opened in 2008 and hosts Real Salt Lake and Utah Royals FC.
