Section is a small town located in Jackson County, Alabama, situated atop Sand Mountain in the Chattanooga-Cleveland-Dalton Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the community is home to 756 residents. The area holds deep historical roots, with Cherokee people having once hunted and lived on these lands before pioneer settlers arrived in large numbers during 1862. The town's name reflects its origins as the location of a square-mile parcel of land known as the 16th Section, which the federal government required to be set aside to support public schools. Originally called Mt. Zion when the first post office was established, the community developed as smaller settlements including Kirby's Creek, Gossets Hollow, and Fern Cliff came together to form the Town of Section. Early development included Bort Harrison's water-powered flour and grist mill, which operated with six horsepower in 1886, and the first store built in 1889. Education became important to the community, with the first school constructed before 1890, though it burned that same year. A replacement school served for 25 years before also burning. Section incorporated in 1946 and spans 4.6 square miles. The town sits along State Route 35, northwest of Rainsville and southeast of Scottsboro, offering residents and visitors dramatic views of the Tennessee River and valley from locations such as Weathington Park. Section High School, established as a high school in 1955 under principal Roy L. Buford, continues to serve the community as a kindergarten through twelfth grade institution within the Jackson County school system.
