Seneca is an unincorporated community in Thomas County, Nebraska, located in the Great Plains. The town was established in January 1888 at a construction halt point on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad along the Middle Loup River. As a division point for the railroad, Seneca became an important hub with a depot, rail yard, and roundhouse that employed over seventy people. The town thrived during the railroad era, boasting hotels, banks, a lumberyard, a railroad cafe, and an automobile dealership. By 1920, Seneca had grown to a peak population of 476 and was the largest municipality in Thomas County. The construction of the Potash Highway between 1918 and 1923 further boosted the community as it ran through the center of town. However, the town's fortunes reversed in the early 1940s when the railroad realigned its operations and a reconfiguration of what became Nebraska Highway 2 shifted the highway south of Seneca. These changes eliminated railroad jobs and caused significant population loss as businesses closed. The community continued to decline over subsequent decades. In 2013, a dispute over a village board ordinance regarding horse ownership led residents to petition for disincorporation. In May 2014, voters approved disincorporation by a narrow margin of 17 to 16, and the village was officially dissolved by the Thomas County Board at the end of June 2014. The 2010 census recorded a population of 33.
