Sheldon is a town in Franklin County in central Vermont, home to 2,136 residents according to the 2020 census. The town was named after Revolutionary War colonel Elisha Sheldon, though it was originally called Hungerford after Samuel Hungerford, who held the charter. Located on both sides of the Missisquoi River, a west-flowing tributary of Lake Champlain, Sheldon spans 39.5 square miles and contains the unincorporated community of Sheldon Springs in its western section. Vermont Route 105 follows the river through town, connecting Sheldon to Enosburg Falls to the east and St. Albans, the county seat, to the southwest. Additional state routes provide access to neighboring towns including Highgate Center, Swanton, Franklin, and East Franklin.
The town has produced notable figures throughout American history. Heber C. Kimball, a nineteenth-century Mormon apostle, was born in Sheldon, as was Lorenzo A. Babcock, who became the first Attorney General of Minnesota Territory. Elihu Goodsell, a Wisconsin legislator and businessman, and Bob Laraba, a professional and collegiate football player, also hailed from the community.
