Shenandoah is a borough in Schuylkill County, located in Pennsylvania's Coal Region approximately 53.5 miles northwest of Allentown and 102.3 miles from Philadelphia. Today, the community is home to about 4,247 residents as of 2021.
The area's settlement began in 1835 when farmer Peter Kehley built a log cabin and cleared land in the valley's center, living in isolation for roughly twenty years. When he sold his claim to the Philadelphia Land Company in 1862, the company laid out the town in anticipation of coal mining development. Rapid growth followed during the Civil War era as anthracite coal mines opened, and Shenandoah was incorporated as a borough in 1866. The town became a notable center of activity during the era of the Molly Maguires in the 1870s.
Immigration shaped the community's character significantly. Early English, Welsh, Irish, and German settlers were followed by waves of people from Poland, Lithuania, Italy, and other central, eastern, and southern European countries around the turn of the twentieth century. By 1920, Shenandoah's population had swelled to nearly 30,000 residents, making it a bustling coal town served by three railroad companies: the Lehigh Valley Railroad, the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the Reading Railroad. The borough reportedly offered more bars per thousand people than any other location in the world during this era.
The Great Coal Strike of 1902 brought the Pennsylvania National Guard to maintain order, with resolution coming only after President Theodore Roosevelt's intervention. Following World War II, the decline of anthracite coal mining led to significant emigration as workers sought employment elsewhere, fundamentally transforming the community.
