Shepherd is a village in Isabella County, Michigan, with a population of 1,469 according to the 2020 census. Located within Coe Township, Shepherd has roots reaching back to the mid-nineteenth century when lumberman Isaac Shepherd and others first settled the area along the Salt River. The community originally received a post office named Salt River in 1857 and was formally platted in 1885. When the railroads expanded into the region that same year, the station was named Shepherd in honor of Isaac Shepherd's estate. The post office followed suit, officially changing its name to Shepherd in 1887. That year proved transformative but challenging, as a major fire destroyed much of the community. The resilient residents rebuilt quickly, and Shepherd was incorporated as a village in 1889. In more recent history, the village established the annual Shepherd Maple Syrup Festival in 1958, an event that has grown to feature exhibits, crafts, music, food, and a parade. Today, Shepherd remains a small but vibrant community, with US 127 providing convenient highway access just east of the village boundaries.
