Shutesbury is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts with a population of 1,717 at the 2020 census. For at least two thousand years before European colonization, Nipmuc towns inhabited the area, calling it Sanakkamak, meaning "difficult land," due to its many ponds, swamps, and streams. The land provided resources for hunting, fishing, and gathering wild foods including chestnuts, berries, and Indian potatoes. Shutesbury was colonized in 1735 as Road Town, named for the colonists' initial request to build a road through roadless territory. It was officially incorporated as Shutesbury in 1761, honoring former governor Samuel Shute. Early settlers were required to clear four acres of forest and plant grazing grasses. After the Revolution, the area was largely clear-cut for sheep grazing during a brief textile boom, then gradually reforested after the Civil War. Today, the town has worked to preserve its rural character through zoning laws and an extensive Master Plan. The eastern third of town is part of the Quabbin Reservation, with significant portions also comprising Shutesbury State Forest. The town is known for maintaining actual night darkness by forgoing street lighting. In December 2008, a major ice storm devastated the area, leaving residents without power for up to ten days and requiring National Guard assistance with cleanup. Shutesbury remains part of the Springfield metropolitan area and is home to a planned community based on historic Baker's Farm.
