Sisterdale is an unincorporated farming and ranching community located 13 miles north of Boerne in Kendall County, established in 1847 by German surveyor and free thinker Nicolaus Zink. Situated in the valley of Sister Creek at an elevation of 1,280 feet, the community grew to include some of the most intellectually distinguished German immigrants of its era. Among its settlers were geographer Ernst Kapp, journalist Carl Adolph Douai, author and diplomat Julius Fröbel, and August Siemering, who would later found the San Antonio Express News. The community also attracted Baron Ottomar von Behr and future Wall Street financier Gustav Theissen.
Sisterdale became part of Kendall County when the county was formed in 1862, having originally been part of Comal County. The community received a post office in 1851, with Ottomar W. Behr serving as its first postmaster. Julius Holekamp, born to settlers Fritz and Betty Holekamp on June 10, 1849, was the first child born in both Sisterdale and Kendall County.
These settlers were Forty-Eighters, intellectual liberals who fled the Revolutions of 1848 in the German states. They brought with them utopian ideals centered on human rights, and they advocated for causes including the abolition of slavery, free public education, and separation of church and state. Their legacy is preserved in the Sisterdale Valley District, a 2,893-acre historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and in the restored 1885 cotton gin that now houses Sister Creek Vineyards.
