Solon, a city in southeastern Cuyahoga County, is a suburb of Cleveland with a population of 24,262 as of the 2020 census. The community traces its roots to 1820 when the first settlers arrived from Connecticut to settle in the Connecticut Western Reserve. The township took its name from Lorenzo Solon Bull, son of early settler Isaac Bull, with the middle name chosen to honor Solon, the ancient Greek lawmaker known as the father of democracy. Early pioneers faced significant challenges, particularly with drainage and wetlands issues that complicated farming efforts. Despite these obstacles, settlers transformed the area into productive agricultural land, growing corn and wheat and establishing dairy farms that included five cheese factories. By 1850, the township population had grown to 1,034.
The expansion of nearby Cleveland's railroad industry boosted Solon's growth significantly. In 1857, the Cleveland and Mahoning Railroad established a line through the city. Following a traditional New England town plan, Solon developed a public square at its center and, together with neighboring townships, created SOM Center Road as a north-south corridor through the town centers of Solon, Orange, and Mayfield. Incorporated as a village in 1927, Solon became a city in 1961 under a mayor-council government structure. The city pioneered comprehensive zoning planning, successfully building a strong industrial base while protecting residential communities. Today, Solon offers 687 acres of city parks and recreational areas, along with three golf courses within its borders. The 1991 completion of US 422 as an east-west corridor further enhanced regional connectivity.
