Splendora is a small city in Montgomery County, Texas, located approximately 37 miles north-northeast of Houston. With a population of 1,683 residents as of the 2020 census, it covers 2.1 square miles and maintains a largely rural character, with 72 percent of its residents living in rural areas. The city's name reflects its origins, chosen in 1896 for the splendor of its floral environment.
The town's history traces back to the late 1800s when the Houston, East and West Texas Railway, at the suggestion of Charles Cox, built a narrow-gauge spur at the location originally known as Cox's Switch. The area began to grow after W.W. Burrow established a general store in 1883. Cox later recommended to postmaster Milton Z. King that the town be renamed Splendora because of its beautiful natural surroundings. The city was formally incorporated in December 1966.
Today, Splendora is governed by a mayor and five council members who make up the City Council. The city is served by the Splendora Independent School District, which joined the Lone Star College district in 1996. Residents are represented in the Texas House of Representatives by Republican Janice Holt and in the United States House of Representatives by Republican Dan Crenshaw.
