Stringer is an unincorporated community in southwestern Jasper County, Mississippi, situated at the intersection of State Highways 15 and County Road 10, positioned between Bay Springs and Laurel just north of Mississippi State Highway 533. According to the 2010 census, the community had a population of 1,867.
The community takes its name from John Stringer, who served as postmaster. Originally called P.K., the settlement changed its name to Stringer after the post office operated under the P.K. name from 1882 to 1895 and began using the name Stringer starting in 1895. Stringer was incorporated in 1905, though it was later disincorporated. The community developed along the former Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad and experienced considerable growth in its early years. By 1910, Stringer boasted a thriving local economy with ten general stores, a saw mill, a drug store, and a cotton gin operating within the community.
Education remains an important part of community life through Stringer Attendance Center, the local school. The school earned recognition from the Mississippi Department of Education as a High Performing school and was planned to become a Star School during the 2011–2012 school year. The community is also notable as the birthplace of L.C. Ulmer, a delta blues singer who gained recognition in American music history.
