Sulligent is a town located in Lamar County, Alabama. Originally called Elliott in honor of the chief engineer of the Kansas City-Memphis-Birmingham Railroad, the town was renamed just one month later to Sulligent, a portmanteau combining the names of Sullivan, the railroad's superintendent, and Sargeant, its passenger agent. The town was incorporated on February 12, 1897. S. F. Pennington opened the first general store, while Dr. R. J. Redden established the first drug store.
Cotton production and processing formed the backbone of Sulligent's early economy. During the mid-1890s, the town ginned over 2,500 bales of cotton annually, which were shipped via railroad. The Sulligent Cotton Oil Company, once the largest cotton gin under one roof, exemplified the town's industrial significance. William W. Ogden, who owned the cotton oil company and served as mayor from 1919 to 1921 and in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1931 to 1934, played a central role in the community's development.
For much of its history, Sulligent served as Lamar County's largest community, holding that distinction from 1910 to 1950 and again in 2000, before eventually losing it to the county seat of Vernon. The population peaked at 2,151 in 2000 but declined to 1,927 by the 2010 census. The town is home to Lamar County's only structure on the National Register of Historic Places, the Greer Bankhead House. Sulligent has also produced notable Auburn University athletes, including defensive back James McKinney and running back Joe Cribbs.
