Sun Prairie is a city located in Dane County, Wisconsin, and serves as the most populous suburb of Madison, the state capital. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 35,967 residents and is part of the Madison metropolitan area. The city's origins trace back to 1837 when President Martin Van Buren commissioned a party of 45 men, including Augustus A. Bird, to build a capital for the Territory of Wisconsin in Madison. After traveling from Milwaukee in rainy conditions, the group emerged at the edge of a prairie on June 9, and with the sun shining for the first time in days, carved the words "Sun Prairie" into a tree. Charles Bird returned two years later and became the first settler of the area. The Town of Sun Prairie was officially created on February 2, 1846, and later incorporated as a village on March 6, 1868. The community transitioned to city status in 1958 following a referendum election held on May 6, with 295 votes in favor and 284 against, leading to the Wisconsin Secretary of State filing the certificate of incorporation on May 15, 1958. More recently, the city faced a significant tragedy on July 10, 2018, when a gas explosion destroyed a downtown city block, damaging a bar, pizza restaurant, the historic city hall, and nearby buildings. Fire Captain and bar owner Cory Barr was fatally injured in the explosion. The community's response to this disaster gave rise to the tagline "Sun Prairie Strong," reflecting the city's resilience and unity.
