Sylacauga is a city in Talladega County, Alabama, with a population of 12,578 at the 2020 census. The area has a rich and layered history stretching back centuries. De Soto's expedition documented the region in 1540, encountering indigenous peoples along the Coosa River. Later, a village called Chalakagay was settled in 1748 by refugee Shawnee Indians led by Peter Chartier, though most Native Americans were forcibly removed from Alabama in 1836 under the Indian Removal Act.
The city was first incorporated in 1838 as Syllacoga and renamed Sylacauga in 1887. Its name may derive from Indian words meaning "The Place of the Chalaka Tribe" or from Creek words for buzzards and roost. Early transportation infrastructure developed through ferries, a plank road to Montgomery built in 1852, and the Anniston and Atlantic Railroad completed through Sylacauga on December 1, 1886. The city's first post office was established in 1838 with George Washington Stone as postmaster, who later became Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.
Known as "The Marble City," Sylacauga is built upon what is claimed to be the world's finest marble. The deposit was first discovered in 1820 by Dr. Edward Gantt. This vast reserve, part of the Murphy Marble Belt and containing the world's largest commercial deposit of madre cream marble, has supplied notable structures including the United States Supreme Court, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial.
