Temvik is a ghost town in Emmons County, North Dakota, situated between Linton and Hazelton along U.S. Route 83. Founded in 1904 as Godkin, the town underwent several name changes in its early years. It was briefly known as Brophy after local store owner L.W. Brophy, then renamed Larvik in 1908. In 1911, following a dispute with the nearby townsite Templeton, the two communities merged and adopted the name Temvik, a combination of the two original names. Residents had initially sought to call the merged town Union City, but the Postal Service denied this application. The town operated a post office with zip code 58574 from 1911 until its closure in 1968, after which mail service transferred to Linton.
During the early twentieth century, Temvik supported a thriving community of approximately two hundred residents, complete with a school and several grain elevators. The population declined significantly over the decades, dropping to around forty-five people by 1960. Today, only a farm remains where the town once stood. Temvik Cemetery, a reminder of the town's past, is located west of the community along U.S. Route 83. Many early settlers in the area were of German or German-from-Russia descent. The town was once part of McCulley Township, which dissolved in 1998, and is now part of the West Emmons Unorganized Territory. Notable residents included state legislators Anton Larson and Carl Larvick, as well as pastor and author Ray Stedman.
