Tishomingo is a small town in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, with a 2020 population of 370. The town takes its name from Tishomingo, a notable historical figure who signed the Treaty of Pontotoc in 1832. Before retiring to farming, Tishomingo had served with Major-General Anthony Wayne against the Shawnees in the Northwest Territory and received a silver medal from President George Washington. He also served under Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. When white settlers encroached on his land, Tishomingo was forced to relocate following the 1837 treaty that compelled the Chickasaws to move to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma. He died of smallpox on the Trail of Tears and is buried somewhere near Little Rock, Arkansas. His son, Iuka, became the namesake of Tishomingo County's county seat. Andrew Jackson himself camped at the site during a visit to the Creek nation. The town developed with the construction of the Illinois Central Railroad. Today, Tishomingo sits along Mississippi Highway 25, near Tishomingo State Park and close to the Mississippi-Alabama border. The area contains four sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including Bear Creek Mound and Village Site. Bear Creek, which flows through the state park, remains popular for canoeing and fishing.
