Todd is an unincorporated community that straddles the line between Watauga and Ashe counties in northwestern North Carolina, sitting along the South Fork of the New River at an elevation of 2,992 feet. With a population of 2,141 at the 2010 census, Todd has a rich history rooted in the Blue Ridge Mountains backcountry.
Originally known as Elk Cross Roads, the community was settled in the late 18th and early 19th centuries by farmers. The South Fork Baptist Church was established in 1833, followed by a Post Office in 1837. By the 1850s, Todd was large enough to appear on North Carolina maps, and several dry goods stores operated there before the Civil War.
The latter half of the 19th century brought significant growth through timber harvesting and mining of mica and copper. By the 1890s, Todd had actually surpassed the nearby town of Boone in size. In 1894, the Post Office was renamed Todd to honor Joseph Warren Todd, a Civil War veteran and native son who restored order in the region after the war. Todd later practiced law in Jefferson and served in the North Carolina General Assembly.
The early 20th century brought Todd's peak prosperity with the arrival of the Virginia-Carolina Railway, nicknamed the "Virginia Creeper" for its slow climb up steep grades. At its height, Todd boasted two doctors, a dentist, a bank, seven stores, three mills, and two hotels. The town was incorporated in 1915 with a mayor, council, and marshal. However, by 1934 the timber was exhausted and the Great Depression forced the railroad to cease service. A devastating 1940 flood accelerated the decline, and the town's charter was revoked in the 1970s. Today, Todd has experienced a resurgence through cultural tourism and second-home communities.
