Unity is a town in Waldo County, Maine, with a population of 2,292 at the 2020 census. Originally settled by Quakers and known as Twenty-Five Mile Pond Plantation for its location on a pond twenty-five miles from Fort Halifax in Winslow, the town was incorporated and renamed Unity in 1804. Today, it serves as the service center for the northern portion of Waldo County.
Unity is perhaps best known as home to the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, which purchased 200 acres in town in 1996. The organization's Common Ground Country Fair, held annually in Unity, draws more than 50,000 visitors each year. The town was also formerly home to Unity College, founded in 1965 to help offset economic decline from the chicken farming industry. The college was the town's largest employer as of 2007, but in 2020 transitioned to a hybrid learning model that significantly reduced staff. By 2024, the original campus operates with only about 50 students using the facilities at any given time.
The town covers 41.36 square miles, with Unity Pond being its primary water feature. In recent years, Unity has become home to a growing Amish community, with eight families from the Michigan Amish Churches settling there during 2008 and 2009.
