Upper Sandusky, the county seat of Wyandot County, Ohio, sits along the upper Sandusky River approximately 59 miles south of Toledo and 62 miles north of Columbus. The city takes its name from an earlier Wyandot village that occupied the same location. It earned the designation "Upper" because it lies near the headwaters of the Sandusky River, which flows downriver through the city of Sandusky before emptying into Lake Erie, placing Upper Sandusky about 55 miles southwest of its namesake city.
The area's history runs deep. During the American Revolutionary War, Upper Sandusky was a principal Wyandot town, sometimes called Half-King's Town after the Wyandot leader Dunquat. After the war ended in 1783, Native Americans gathered here to form the Western Confederacy, intended to resist United States expansion into the Northwest Territory. During the War of 1812, Fort Ferree was constructed on a bluff overlooking the river's floodplain by Pennsylvania militia under Lieutenant Colonel Joel Ferree.
The Wyandot remained in the area under the Treaty of Fort Meigs in 1817 until 1842, when they were forcibly removed under the Indian Removal Act. A new town was platted near the abandoned village in 1843, with the first colonizer's house built in 1845. The county jail, erected in 1846, was the town's first building. Upper Sandusky became the county seat in 1848. According to the 2020 census, the city now has a population of 6,698.
