Varysburg is a hamlet situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 20A and New York State Route 98 in the eastern portion of the town of Sheldon, close to the Wyoming County border with Orangeville. According to the 2010 census, the Varysburg ZIP Code area had a population of 1,646, including part of Orangeville.
The settlement was founded in 1805 by William L. Vary, who purchased land from the Holland Land Company and arrived with his extended family from Stephentown. They established sawmills and gristmills in the valley formed by the Tonawanda Creek. Vary suffered a head injury in a logging accident in 1807 but went on to lead a regiment during the War of 1812, earning a cane made from the main mast of the USS Lawrence from Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Upon his return in 1815, Vary opened his family farm to settlers, and the village was incorporated. Early residents were predominantly Baptists, who formed the Free Will Baptist Church in 1816, later joined by a Methodist Episcopal Church in 1836.
Beginning in 1833, the Davis and Madden families developed Varysburg into a manufacturing center with carding, cloth, and timber mills powered by the Tonawanda Creek. A cheese factory built in 1861 sparked the village's golden age, and by 1885 eight factories operated there. However, the cheese factory burned in 1895, and the death of Edward Madden in 1899 ended the village's industrial prominence. A devastating fire in 1908 destroyed much of the western half, including the hotel and general store. By 1910, most residents had relocated, though brothers Charles and John Hartung used the remaining buildings for an apple evaporator operation. Further fires in 1921 and 1928 continued the decline.
