Vicksburg, the county seat of Warren County, Mississippi, sits on a high bluff along the east bank of the Mississippi River, across from Louisiana. The city was founded by French colonists in 1719 when they built Fort Saint Pierre on the bluffs overlooking the Yazoo River. The area had long been home to the Natchez people, and the French engaged in fur trading with them and other groups while establishing plantations. Following a Spanish military outpost established in 1790 and known as Fort Nogales, Americans took possession in 1798 and renamed the settlement Walnut Hills. The village was formally incorporated as Vicksburg in 1825, named after Newitt Vick, a Methodist missionary who established a Protestant mission there.
During the American Civil War, Vicksburg served as a key Confederate river port. The city surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on July 4, 1863, after a grueling 47-day siege. This surrender, combined with General Robert E. Lee's defeat at Gettysburg the day before, marked the turning point of the war in the Union's favor. The victory gave the Union Army complete control of the Mississippi River. According to the 2020 census, Vicksburg had a population of 21,573. Today, the city is home to three large installations of the United States Army Corps of Engineers and maintains a majority African American population.
