Victorville is a city in the Victor Valley of San Bernardino County, California, with a 2020 census population of 134,810. It serves as the principal city of the Victorville–Hesperia–Apple Valley urban area, which had 355,816 residents in 2020, making it the 117th largest urban area in the United States.
The area's history begins with the Serrano people, who were the first Native Americans to inhabit the region. In 1858, Aaron G. Lane, a Mexican-American War veteran turned gold rush trader, established a waystation called Lane's Crossing on the Mojave River to supply travelers crossing the desert. This settlement changed hands and names several times as other pioneers arrived, including John Fry Miller, who renamed it Pioneer Station, and Mormon families who established additional way stations throughout the valley. In 1867, a new wagon road created Mormon Crossing, which became a favored route for desert traffic.
The city's modern identity took shape in 1885 when a telegraph station opened at a railroad siding named Victor, after California Southern Railroad General Manager Jacob Nash Victor. The growing settlement became known as Victor until 1901, when postmistress Abbey Turner suggested renaming it Victorville to avoid confusion with Victor, Colorado. The city was officially incorporated on September 21, 1962. Route 66, established in 1926, ran through Victorville on D and Seventh streets, further connecting the community to regional transportation networks. The Victorville Army Airfield, built beginning in 1941 and later renamed George Air Force Base, served as a major military installation until its 1992 closure.
