Vinegar Bend is an unincorporated census-designated place located in Washington County, Alabama, about 15 miles south-southwest of Chatom. The community is known for its unusual name, which has appeared on numerous lists of distinctive place names. According to local lore, Vinegar Bend received its name when a container of vinegar burst at a freight station near the river's bend, though other origin stories exist as well.
The community has experienced significant changes over time. When writer Lucius Beebe visited in the 1940s, he documented accounts from local residents describing a prosperous past. At the turn of the century, Vinegar Bend had been a bustling township with a large planing mill, numerous stores and residences, and a substantial forty-two-room hotel. The railroad maintained half a dozen engines and supported active commerce throughout the area.
By the early twenty-first century, Vinegar Bend had become much smaller. The community was first officially listed as a census-designated place in the 2010 census, when it had 192 residents. The population declined slightly to 178 by the 2020 census. For many years, Vinegar Bend maintained a post office with ZIP code 36584, but this service was permanently closed on July 1, 2010, after the bridge on the main road into town was closed for repairs.
The community's most notable connection to wider recognition came through Wilmer "Vinegar Bend" Mizell, a Major League Baseball pitcher and U.S. Congressman from North Carolina, who was nicknamed after the community where his family lived.
