Waldron Island is an unincorporated community in San Juan County, Washington, nestled among the San Juan Islands. With a population of 104 residents at the 2000 census, it remains a small and deliberately quiet place. The island spans 4.6 square miles and is designated a Limited Development District, meaning commercial recreation facilities are prohibited and large-scale mining, paved roads, and large homes cannot be built.
Life on Waldron is deliberately remote. There is no ferry service to the island, only one county-owned dock, and no electricity or water supply. The last store closed in 1942, and residents have maintained this isolation ever since.
The island's name came during an 1841 survey by the Wilkes Expedition, when Lieutenant Case of the Vincennes named it after one of the Waldron brothers, Richard Russell or Thomas Westbrook. Earlier Spanish explorers had called it Lemos during an 1791 expedition. In the nineteenth century, Waldron Island's sandstone was mined for building materials, and coal deposits were also discovered. Homesteaders settled the island during that era, including the Krumdiack family, whose 1890 homestead is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The island gained literary attention when resident June Burn featured Waldron prominently in her 1941 autobiography, Living High, describing her family's log cabin experience. Her daughter-in-law, Doris Burn, also wrote books there. Composer Morten Lauridsen purchased the former general store, known as Crum's Castle, in 1975 and has composed numerous pieces on the island. Waldron experiences warm, dry summers with a Mediterranean climate.
