Warrenton is a small coastal city in Clatsop County, Oregon, situated about five miles west of Astoria. Named for D.K. Warren, an early settler, the town has grown into a community of 6,277 residents according to the 2020 census. Built on tidal flats at the mouth of the Columbia River, Warrenton's founding depended on an ingenious system of dikes constructed by Chinese laborers, with the main dike completed in 1878 to protect against flooding from the river.
The area's history stretches back further than European settlement. The Clatsop tribe of Native Americans originally inhabited this land, spanning from the south shore of the Columbia River to Tillamook Head. A replica of Fort Clatsop, the Lewis and Clark Expedition's final encampment, still stands just outside the city limits today.
The first settlers arrived between 1845 and the early 1850s, establishing what would initially be called Lexington, the first county seat for Clatsop County. The area later became known as Skipanon, a name preserved by the Skipanon River that flows through town. After D.K. Warren purchased land from early settlers and completed his dike system, he laid out the town around 1891. Warren built the first schoolhouse in 1892 and donated it to the school district. Warrenton was platted in 1889 and incorporated as a city in 1899.
