Waterloo is a small town situated along the north shore of Pickwick Lake in Lauderdale County, Alabama, as part of the Florence–Muscle Shoals metropolitan area known as The Shoals. Originally incorporated in 1832 on the banks of the Tennessee River, the town was likely named to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo. According to historical records, Waterloo was reincorporated in 1903. During the 1930s, the town experienced significant change when the Tennessee Valley Authority completed the Pickwick Landing Dam, which created Pickwick Lake and necessitated relocating the community to its current location. This development, along with subsequent flooding, caused the town to lose considerable land over the decades.
Waterloo's population has declined substantially since its peak. When first appearing on the U.S. Census in 1880, it was the second largest community in Lauderdale County after Florence, eventually reaching its zenith of 524 residents in 1940. As of the 2020 census, the town's population had fallen to 178 residents, representing a loss of two-thirds of its peak population. The town now ranks as the eighth and smallest incorporated community in Lauderdale County.
