White Pine is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Ontonagon County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, located within Carp Lake Township east of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. As of the 2020 census, the community had a population of 339 residents.
The settlement began as a mining town with deep historical roots. Mining engineer Thomas H. Wilcox discovered mass copper deposits in the Mineral River and established the White Pine Copper Company to extract it. White Pine received its post office designation as "White Pine Mine" in June 1915 and served as a station on the Chicago, Minneapolis and St. Paul Railway. The Copper Range Company later operated the White Pine mine from 1955 to 1995.
Most of White Pine's development occurred during the 1950s as a company town designed to house mine workers and their families. Mining companies built and leased housing to attract workers, believing family stability would improve retention rates. The community was developed as a typical post-war suburb, featuring single-story ranch homes alongside a trailer park and apartment complex. However, the community never fully developed as envisioned. Changing work patterns in the 1950s meant that many miners preferred to commute by automobile, sometimes up to 90 miles daily, rather than relocate to the company town. This shift reflected how the automobile transformed commuting patterns compared to earlier mining operations where workers walked to nearby mines.
White Pine was officially recognized as a census-designated place for the 2010 census, establishing defined boundaries and official population statistics for the first time.
